18th Century Door Knocker

18th century iron door knocker with a beautiful two-layered floral backplate. It is hand forged, chiseled, embossed, and repoussé. It has a natural iron patina. The intricate floral details on two separate hand cut and embossed layers creating the backplate is the work of a master blacksmith. This one of a kind door knocker was taken from the broken front door of the house on Scotchtown Planation in 1956 when Talmadge Selph’s shop repaired the door. Talmage Selph, Bowling Green, Virginia purchased the knocker from the caretaker of the Scotchtown Planation, Hanover County, Virginia which is the home of Patrick Henry. Dimensions: 5.25 x 5 inches

Provenance:

Talmadge Selph, Bowling Green, VA
Gordon Barlow, Swoope, Virginia (1964)
