This is a classic Virginia style hunting pouch from Rockingham County, Virginia with a classic Virginia style powder horn that is decorated with applied bands. This powder horn had three applied bands. The top two are pin fastened applied band and the middle band is missing. The powder horn is 14” around the curve. The butt plug is fastened to the horn using hand filed screws.

This beautiful deer hide hunting pouch has a single pouch and extra wide shoulder strap. The hunting pouch is 8’ x 10” and has a 14” applied flap with 70% of the original deer hair. Deer hair is unique because it is hollow. Instead of a solid core, the hair has tiny air pockets like a sponge. This traps air to keep the deer warm in the winter.

The hunting pouch was an essential accoutrement used by frontiersmen to carry ammunition, patches, and powder for their longrifle, tools, and survival supplies while venturing to the frontier and participating in our American wars.
