English Fowler (ca Early 18th Century)

This is a very interesting early 18th century long fowler that could be American but I believe is probably English. It is stocked in walnut with unusual iron mounts not often found on an English fowler this early (trigger guard, butt plate, side plate and thimbles). The fowler is 76” overall length with a 60” barrel. The wood is probably cherry) full stock without repair or replacement. The fowler has exceptional craving around the tang and checking at the wrist. This is a wonderful long fowler that is original flint and with original wood that has excellent color and patina. Rarely seen without a lot of repair.

There is the name Rob Roy MacGregor engraved on the side plate. I do not know what to make of this engraving. It appears to have been added but done so during the period. Rob Roy was a magical character in Scotland that died in 1734 (see bio below). Question: Is this fowler early enough to have belonged to Rob Roy? Possibly! As my friend Walter O’Connor said; “ice cream on the cake, enjoy it”.  I have not placed a value on the name but it is an enhancement regardless of if it is the owner’s name or was engraved as a tribute to Sir Walter Scott’s Novel “Rob Roy” written in 1817.

Long fowlers with original flint and untouched wood are very hard to find!

Rob Roy, by name of Robert MacGregor, (baptized March 7, 1671, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland—died December 28, 1734, Balquhidder, Perthshire), noted Highland outlaw whose reputation as a Scottish Robin Hood was exaggerated in Sir Walter Scott’s novel Rob Roy (1818) as a soldier, businessman, cattle-rustler and outlaw that above all was a folk hero, a latter day Robin Hood whose transformation as a supporter of the poor that made him a legend.
