American Militia Bi-come Hat with Original Tin Box

Very fine Bi-come (Chapeau de Bras) hat with original tin hatbox. This style hat was very popular with the American State Militias and Volunteers from 1790 until well after the Civil War.

Rare to find a bi-come hat and even rarer to find one with the original tin box that is in very fine condition. The hat is made of beaver felt with decorated gold embroidery trim on both sides and wider vertical embroidery trim on the front.

The label inside the bi-come hat is Lincoln-Bennett and Co., Saelville Street, Piccadilly, London. The company operated at 2 Saelville Street and later was renamed the Lincoln, Bennett and Amp, Company, London and occupied three building located at  1, 2, and Saelville Street.

The condition of the hat and tin hatbox is outstanding.  (For a full description of a bi-come hat, see “Soldiers in America” – Don Troiani, page 89). This is an outstanding Militia Bi-come Hat that makes a great exhibition piece for any collection.
