SOLD – Original English 17th Century Cabasset Helmet

Cabasset was a light helmet used in the 16th and 17th centuries by light cavalry and infantrymen in Europe and in America. This very rare and important helmet was excavated in Duxbury, New England and is in great condition for its age and history.

Duxbury is a town established in the mid-1600s as a farm community extension of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. By the time European settlers arrived in Duxbury, the region was inhabited by Native Americans known as Wampanoags who called Duxbury, Mattakeesett, meaning “place of many fish”. There was peace between the colonist and the Native Americans, however disease decimated the Native American population.

Archaeological digs at the 17th-century site provided wonderful English artifacts. This cabasset stands roughly 10” tall and the base measures 12” x 9”. There is some deterioration that occurred before excavation, but the importance of this helmet is that it was actually used at the Plymouth Colony.
