ORIGINAL MILITIA KIDNEY CARTRIDGE BOX AND BELT

Very early, original militia kidney cartridge box and belt found in Albemarle County, Virginia (ca. Rev War  ). The box measures 9” long x 2 ½” deep x  2 ¾” tall and has a tin insert that holds twenty (20) 69 caliber paper cartridges. The tin insert was undoubtedly made by a very talented tinsmith and completed by a superb leather-worker.

This cartridge box has very fine hand switched leather that is surprisingly supple. The leather box and strap has never been cleaned and is in excellent condition with the exception of one split on the corner of the cartridge box lid. The belt is also supple and had early style brass buckle (this buckle style has been dug at Valley Forge) and strap loops.

In March, 1778 the Colonial War Board designated that cartridges boxes would be made with a leather exterior, an attached leather flap, an in interior flap of leather or cloth, a tin insert for 12 or more cartridges, and a shoulder strap.

Very rare early militia cartridge box as tin insert boxes are much rarer than those with wooden blocks,
