Rev War Boarding Hat

A very rare Revolutionary War Leather Boarding Hat with a period Plume.  This is a wonderful PERIOD BOILED-LEATHER FIGHTING HAT. It is in very good condition with the expected signs of use and wear. Of single piece, approximately 3/8” thick, boiled & pressed, leather construction; and of American Revolutionary War Period form with a domed crown and an integral circular brim.

The interior, is an oxidized, smooth, leather surfaces with an age patina. This is the classic American Revolutionary War Period form; and the type of heavy leather often worn for defense against Sword-Blows.

The survival rate of hats from the Revolutionary War era is extremely small. Written documentations about hats from the era is even smaller. Historians depend upon 18th century drawings from military and civilian life to guide us as we study 18th century hats.

It seems certain that the dome style hat with a circular brim was the popular style for defense against blows to the head. Beautiful original Plume is attached. The attachment has been strengthen with gum to prevent future damage.

Boarding Hat is from the William Corbin Family

Stafford – Culpeper Counties (From   DAR – SAR  Records)

William Corbin was a Sailor in Rev War from Virginia

A recorded auction sale with James Julia – Fall 2020 for a similar hat (Lot # 2323) sold for $19,550.00.

This Boarding Hat is a wonderful and colorful Revolutionary War item that is rarely offered for sale.
