18th Century Sword and Document

Beautiful 18th century American hilted sword (blade marked by English bladesmith ‘Harvey’) belonged to Archer Wilson, Augusta County, Virginia with original handwritten frontier era note dated December 6, 1786. The writer, Archer Wilson, asks local merchant James Cornitt to send him household items. No doubt this is a Wilson copy of his letter to buy goods. Archer Wilson lived in Augusta, Virginia during the pre /post-Revolution War years. James Cornitt settled Augusta County, Virginia around 1750 and operated as a shopkeeper.

Transcribed: “To Mr. James Cornitt; Sir pleese to let George have me some things such as Liyebells if any such, if not any that will do, and charge it to me. Farther as you will much obly your Hble servt. Archer Wilson. Reverse panel: “Arch. Wilson / 6 Dec 1786”

In the 18th century –‘Livebells was term for small metal vessels’
