18th Century French Tin Glazed Pottery Jar – Col. Cameron
18th Century French Tin Glazed Pottery Jar
In 1824-25, the Marquis de Lafayette, a French revolutionary hero who fought for the American cause, made a triumphant return to the United States. On May 24, 1825, when Lafayette visited Wheeling West Virginia at Beymer’s Landing on a crowded bank filled with citizens, he was addressed by Colonel Charles Cameron, who traveled from Bath County, Virginia. Lafayette presented, his friend, Colonel Charles Cameron, “as a token of esteem” a gold cane and this French glazed tobacco jar. They had served together when Colonel Cameron served with the Virginia Militia, in the Revolutionary War. (Colonel Cameron also served at the Battle of Point Pleasant in October 1774.)
