Hand sewn and embroidered clothing steward’s cap (ca. 1650) worn by Lt Colonel William Waters (1623 -1689). This beautiful steward’s night cap is mad of linen and embroidered with fine linen thread. Has a great historical society tag and history .

17th-century linen cap—frequently called a coif or nightcap—is a close-fitting, styled head covering usually made of embroidered linen that were worn for warmth and status. Wealthier individuals wore these fancy coifs decorated with embroidery.

Lt Colonel was a wealthy land owner in Northampton County, Virginia. He patented thousands of acres of land in Virginia. Colonel William Waters was a member of the Assembly from Northampton County, VA (1654-1660, House of Burgess (1666-1676) Officer in the Colonial Army (1659-76) and a Vestryman Hungar’s Parish, (1676)
