F&I War – Revolutionary War Sword

French sword with a beautifully sculptured officers cast brass hilt with a forged blade (ca. 1750). This sword was carried by Colonel Thomas Hughart living on 250 acres on the Calfpasture River. Colonial Hughart served with the Augusta County, Virginia Militia in the F&I War by providing supplies to George Washington’s campaign to capture French Fort Duquesne where he likely obtained this French Sword. He was Colonel in the Second Battalion of the Augusta County Militia and according to his son-in-law, Rev John Montgomery, he served in the Revolutionary War under General Woodford at the Battle of Great Bridge, the Northern and Southern Campaigns, and in commanded of his battalion at the Siege of Yorktown.

Provenance: Phyllis Jean Smalley Cooper, Portsmouth, Virginia (Daughter of Irene Hughart Smalley, Kanawha County, West Virginia); Gordon Barlow, Swoope, Virginia (2001)
