George Washington Birthplace Brick

On December 25, 1779, Wakefield Plantation (birthplace of George Washington), was destroyed by fire. William Augustine Washington, George’s nephew and then heir, proceeded to salvage the bricks from the ruins and build Haywood Plantation, two miles north of Wakefield. Today due to coastal erosion, nothing remains of Haywood except a rubble strewn pile of bricks on the edge of the Potomac River.
