The compass sits on two bun feet and is extensively engraved as pictured. The rear is engraved with 6 cities including Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg & Bremen with associated latitudes.
Provenance: The survey instrument was collected by Earl Chilton, Bowling Green, Virginia, who obtained it from his uncle James Chilton, Chatham. James Chilton was given the survey instrument in the 1950s while performing construction at Kenmore, the home George Washington’s mother at 1200 Charles Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was told that it belonged to George Washington and had been given by Washington to his mother before the Revolutionary War. This wonderful survey instrument has been in Gordon Barlow’s collection since 1976, when he purchased it from Earl Chilton.
