Lobster Tail Helmet – Circa 1620

A superb metal English Civil War Period Lobster Tail Helmet found in New England.  This 17th-century lobster-tail helmet, was worn by English cavalry during the 17^th century. Crafted around 1600-1620, the helmet features its original cheek pieces (with surviving leather), a riveted neck guard, and a ridged comb along the crown. Some pieces of the original strap are still riveted to the helmet and the nose guard is original! One piece skull embossed with radial ribs surmounted by an iron suspension ring, 4 lame articulated neck guard with turned over edge. The helmet has a sliding adjustable nasal bar with swollen finial secured by thumb screw.

These helmets were direct descendants of styles widely use among colonists coming to Plymouth Colony and other colonies in America and officers in Parliamentary and Royalist forces alike. These lobster tail helmets were highly effective in mounted warfare, combining protection with flexibility. The lobster-tail neck guard was particularly useful against downward slashes from sabers, and the full coverage made it ideal for cavalry charges and skirmishes.

This helmet is absolutely 17^th century and is in very good. A very fine example of the collectible.

Condition: Superb for the type and period, wonderful grayish metal, without the usual corrosion, and with all originally preserved, small pieces of leather fittings in the interior.
