Revolutionary War – American made – Plug Bayonet
This American Revolutionary War plug bayonet is an early edged weapon featuring a tapered handle designed to be inserted directly into the muzzle of a musket or longrifle. Plug bayonets remained in circulation throughout the war, frequently used by colonial militias and forged by local blacksmith. Unlike the triangular steel bayonets used by the Continental regulars, plug bayonets resembled standard daggers or short swords and varied greatly in appearance. It is 12” overall length. The 6 ½” blade is flat, broad, and double-edged, tapering to a sharp spear-like point. The hilt has a distinctly tapered handle. The taper allowed it to jam snugly into musket barrel and used as a belt knife. This plug bayonet has a brass cross-guard, making it equally functional as a stand-alone combat dagger or short sidearm when unmounted. This wonderful American blacksmith forged plug bayonet is relatively rare Revolutionary War accoutrement.
