Native American Bug-Eyed Birdstone– Pike County, Ohio
Rare bug-eyed (pop-eyed) birdstone that is a stylized prehistoric Native American stone amulet shaped like a bird and distinguished by large, protruding knob-like eyes. It is an indigenous artifact found in the Scioto River Mound, Pike County, Ohio, that dates primarily from early Woodland period (ca. 1500 BC – 500 AD). This birdstone was carved with a smooth head and with extreme dramatic eye protuberances. It features a highly abstract, sleek design consisting of a long, beak-like face, an arched back, and a “fantail”. It is masterfully carved from polished, visually striking Huronia type slate that creates a marbled pattern across the body. 3 ¼” x 2” tall. This beautiful birdstone is consider to be a ceremonial / totemic artifact. Excellent condition with great surface patina!
