“Spectator”
A favorite 18th century book of George Washington
Provenance: The “Spectator”” was collected by Earl Chilton, Bowling Green, Virginia, who obtained it from his uncle James Chilton, Chatham. James Chilton was given this book in the 1950s while performing construction at Kenmore, the home George Washington’s mother at 1200 Charles Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was told that it belonged to George Washington and had been given by Washington to his mother before the Revolutionary War. This wonderful book has been in the author’s collection since 1976, when he purchased it from Earl Chilton.
