American Stocked –

American Stocked – US Branded Blunderbuss

A very rare American Flintlock Blunderbuss stocked in figured cherry with short-barreled large-bored with a flared (oval) muzzle for use as a short- range weapon. This blunderbuss is surcharged with ‘US’ brand for use in the American Revolutionary War. The lock is a Pattern 1728 French Lock that was reworked at the Continental Armory in Philadelphia and stamped inside with the ‘PH” armory stamp (source Walter O’Conner).

This blunderbuss has a French side plate and butt plate. The French trigger and trigger guard of the size and type used on early French trade fusils. This blunderbuss has a step tang often used by American gunsmiths. 42” overall with a 26’ flared (oval) muzzle (1” X 1 7/8”)

‘US’ Surcharged weapons are difficult to find, especially one that was made at the Continental Armory in Philadelphia. This is the only surcharged blunderbuss I have ever seen. It has its original flintlock with ‘PH’ stamped inside the lock. The stock is original to the blunderbuss but even with the stock restoration is a wonderful and rare American Revolutionary War surcharged weapon.

This blunderbuss comes with a copy of the handwritten description and broadside by Walter O’Conner.

About the Continental Armory

The Philadelphia armory operated under the name Continental Armory and was located within the City of Philadelphia. The Continental Gun Factory was moved from Lancaster, PA to Philadelphia in 1779 and renamed the Continental Armory. Arms “produced” at the Continental Armory were often newly assembled muskets using various scavenged parts from damaged guns; the classic “American Restock” of English, French, Dutch-Germanic and sometimes American components. The Continental Armory, also created newly assembled arms based upon the British P-1769 Short Land Pattern musket, using a combination of salvaged parts and newly made components. A large numbers of French gun parts were sent to America by our French allies. Often these parts included obsolete barrels and locks, which were then reassembled into functional muskets with brass furniture and British style pinned stocks. By the middle of 1780, the Continental Armory was up and running in Philadelphia and at least 16 “US Armorers” were employed there in the repair, refurbishment and assembling of muskets.
